Puppy Mills

In puppy mills, mother dogs spend their entire lives in cramped cages with little to no personal attention. When the mother and father dogs can no longer breed, they are abandoned or killed. Due to poor sanitation, overbreeding and a lack of preventive veterinary care, the puppies frequently suffer from a variety of health issues, creating heartbreaking challenges for families who should be enjoying the delights of adopting a new family member.

ASPCA: Barred From Love Puppy Mills

There’s a special delight in adopting a puppy or kitten, but not all of us search one out through rescues and shelters. There’s a huge market for the sale of puppies and kittens who are particularly young, a specific “breed”, or a particular look. Unfortunately, the results of these “backyard breeders” (as opposed to responsible, trained, and transparent breeders) come with a plethora of problems. These backyard puppies, for example, have been subjected to substandard breeding practices that prioritize profit over animal welfare, with no real care to their genetic background. This results in a higher likelihood of genetic diseases, undesirable temperaments (for example, poor socialization and inadequate care can lead to behavioral problems like fear, aggression, and anxiety), and other health issues, such as kennel cough, distemper, and heavy parasitic loads. This adds to overpopulation and often the surrender of these vulnerable dogs to shelters. More importantly, the practice of breeding for quantity includes terrible sanitation, overcrowded caging, and poor nutrition.

What you can do: adopt from a reputable shelter or rescue organization. Don’t support the purchase of puppies and kittens from pet stores, which thankfully, is becoming illegal in many states.
