Dog Breed Health Risks and Health Screens

With spring in full arrival, skunks have found dens and are having their babies. This means, in order to maintain higher caloric intake, they’re foraging more, including during the day when they’re not as concerned about keeping their babies warm. Skunks (and raccoons, among other nocturnal animals) who are out during the day at this time of year are not rabid, just feeding their babies. Curious dogs might get too close, and a frightened skunk will spray. Its spray is caustic and will sting eyes, and also contains thiols, which are pungent, immediately smelly, and hard to remove. This article by Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine will help if you find yourself in this situation. Here’s what to do if your dog gets skunked.

Prevention and Avoiding Dog Bites

Avoid Dog Bites How do you avoid getting bit by a dog? Start by being polite and respecting the dog’s personal space. Never approach an unfamiliar dog, especially one who’s tied or confined behind a fence or in a car. Don’t pet a dog—even your own—without letting them see and sniff you first.
