Paws In the Bread Dough

Saoirse is easy to forgive for the kitten things she does. She is, perhaps, the most affectionate cat I’ve ever known.

This morning I mixed the ingredients for a lovely cheddar bread. But before I could add the water, Saoirse jumped into the bowl, rolled around in the flour and then sneezed in it. I briefly considered simply not telling anyone (I know, it’s gross.) but dumped the whole thing out and started over.

The next batch was safely allowed to rise and get formed into a huge loaf. After the oven heated up, I put the loaf in to bake. I needed to add water to the base of the oven and not having a broiling pan I brilliantly used a pyrex baking dish. I guess one should not add tepid water to a really hot pyrex dish. After I cleaned up the explosion of glass and threw away the bread, I started all over again.

Finally I had two gorgeous but small loaves sitting on the counter waiting for the oven to heat (again). I left them to go do some laundry and came back to discover that Faolan had eaten half of one (unbaked) loaf. Thank goodness he wasn’t sick. Raw dough is a big no-no for dogs.

Last night I was able to bake an Irish soda bread with raisins to go with our vegetable stew with no mishaps. Tonight I made a creamy tomato soup with leeks and basil and vegan parmesan, and will be serving it with a green salad. The bread? Hmmm…maybe I need to go buy some.
